CIDOC (Comité international pour la documentation) is the committee specialized on museum documentation in a conventional and IT based environment within the International Council of Museums (ICOM). With nearly 1000 members from about 60 countries, its representation in the leading national and international professional bodies is high.

Due to modern information technologies’ breakthrough CIDOC has grown into a large, highly dynamic and important committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which is one of the leading branches of UNESCO. The committee unites over a thousand of professional experts. CIDOC presents about 60 countries from five continents.

ADIT (the Russian Association for the documentation and information technologies) is a Russian association, uniting museum experts orientated on creation of electronic resources and presentation of museum information in the Internet.

The St.-Petersburg conference in 2003 will pass under the slogan "World Cultural Heritage: Uniting by Understanding"

The conference will coincide with the year of celebrating of tercentenary of Saint-Petersburg We assume, that the conference will be the leader both by quantity of the participants, level of expertise and proficiency of experts, who will take part in its various programs. We are sure that CIDOC'2003 in St.-Petersburg Conference will be among most successful conferences of last decade (Nurnberg’1997, London’1999, Ottawa’2000).

The conference will take place in one of the largest museums of St.-Petersburg - the Russian Museum. Panels and events will be held in the Marble Palace of the Museum as well as in the State Hermitage halls. Please see photos of the Marble Palace here.

Topic of the Conference: "Electronic Potential of a Museum: Stimuli and Restrictions, Achievemenets and Problems"

The objective of the conference is to review the results of the application of information technologies in museums:

  • Analysis of the main achievements in the field of storage, restoration, conservation and educational work.
  • Discussion of pressing technical, technological, psychological and social problems and restrictions.
  • Outline of prospective areas of development and the further penetration of information technologies into the traditional museum environment.
  • Incentives for innovations.

Expected results of the conference:

  • Development of priorities and strategy of use of information technologies
  • Selection of the standards of record and storage of the images
  • Planning of the joint international projects.
